Case Study: CMI Novacast Electromagnetic (EM) Pump Used to Cast High-End Parts for Leading Global Foundry
For over 20 years, CMI Novacast’s PG 450 EM pump has played an integral role in casting precision motorsport, series vehicle and aerospace parts for a world-class foundry
Since its founding in 1946, Grainger & Worrall, a leading, UK-based sand casting foundry, has continuously embraced technological improvements and pushed boundaries to make their aluminum castings lighter and more intricate. The foundry’s willingness to innovate has, and continues to, attract business from some of the world’s best-known motorsport, automotive, aerospace, defense and green energy brands.
To meet the exacting specifications of their high-caliber clientele, Grainger & Worrall can’t leave anything to chance – which is why they’ve relied on CMI Novacast’s PG 450 electromagnetic (EM) pump to cast certain specialized components for over two decades.
The PG 450: A “Powerhouse” Pump for the Most Demanding Jobs
In the late 90s, Grainger & Worrall developed a line that employed the Cosworth process to cast high-end automotive components. By design, the Cosworth process relies on an EM pump, which uses electromagnetism – and no moving parts – to move molten metal from furnace to casting with limited (or no) turbulence. When the time came to source a pump, Grainger & Worrall selected the PG 450, a top-of-the-line EM pump that’s highly regarded for its reliability and accuracy.
In the years since the line’s development, the PG 450 has cast a variety of precision parts – including cylinder heads and gear boxes – for industries and brands with best-in-class performance requirements.
Among the many benefits delivered by the pump, the PG 450:
- Reduces turbulence in the flow of metal
- Ensures only the cleanest, highest quality metal is included in castings
- Augments the intrinsic strengths of the alloy used on the line
- Provides a high level of flexibility and adaptability
